The Old English Sheepdog dates back to the early 1800’s with the country of origin… Great Britain. Their first use was for herding sheep and other livestock, but they also make a great companion. The Sheepdog can become quite large so early training may be necessary. Puppies are born with a black and white coat, and it’s only after the puppy coat has been shed that the more common grey or silver shaggy hair appears. The American Kennel Club says the breed has “a clownish energy so requires regular exercise.” The AKC recognized the Sheepdog in the Herding Group in 1888. A friend of mine has 2 Sheepdogs, one of which will be seen in a Chewy.com commercial in the future!
A viewer of DOG TV has shared her wonderful experiences with her own sheepdogs:
A Loving Sheepdog’s Life by Sharon (A DOG TV VIEWER)
I have two Old English Sheepdog sisters, 15 months apart from separate litters. We started with Phoebe, whose energy and love for other dogs quickly made it clear she needed a playmate—so we welcomed her sister, Lily.
Phoebe is my strong yet gentle leader, quietly guiding my slightly anxious Lily. She has a signature move: sitting on people’s feet. Whether you’re standing or sitting, she’ll greet you face-to-face, then turn and plant herself squarely on your feet as if to say, you’re mine now—please proceed with the petting. And don’t you dare stop. If you do, she’ll tilt her head back, lock eyes with you, and politely insist you continue.
Lily, on the other hand, is my spastic, lovable nincompoop—and somehow, every living creature absolutely adores her. We even have a saying: “No one doesn’t love Lily.” She once made a nose-to-nose friend out of a calf. If you kneel down to pet her, brace yourself—you’re about to get the “Full Lily.” That means she’ll climb right up, plant her paws on your shoulders, and hold you steady for an enthusiastic round of face-licking.
About four to five days a week, the girls have doggy playdates at the park or around the neighborhood to burn off their endless energy. Our philosophy is simple: a tired dog is a well-behaved dog.
They also get meaningful mental stimulation through their AKC Therapy Dog visits. Phoebe has completed over 150 visits, and Lily is closing in on 100. It never stops amazing me—when they enter a room, even the sternest faces soften. These two love bugs have created countless moments of comfort, calm, laughter, and connection for all ages.
Best breed ever.
