Cold Weather Safety Tips:
- Bring pets inside. Freezing/cold temperatures can be very harmful.
- Protect paws. Wipe paws, legs and stomach after walks to remove ice, salt and antifreeze.
- Consider booties to protect against cold. A dog lifting it’s paw is a sign it’s too cold.
- Watch for hypothermia/frostbite. Signs may include shivering, lethargy, weak pulse and for frostbite pale or blue skin.
- Provide safe shelter if a dog must be outside. Try to have a dry, warm shelter which is elevated off the ground.
- Hydration. Provide a non-frozen source of water.
- Warmth. Short-haired or elderly dogs may need sweaters to keep warm.
If you find a dog roaming outside in the cold, please protect them in a warm environment. It could save their life!
